We know that parabens, for example, are dangerous, but what if we just cut out paraben-containing products?
It would be nice if it were that simple, but today there are an incredible number of different synthetic chemicals (several thousand) with long, complicated names that many people overlook. Here are some of the most common (and most dangerous) synthetic additives in skincare:
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
Often used as an industrial degreaser, but also widely used in detergents and cosmetics. This chemical is known to irritate the skin, it can lead to skin conditions such as eczema. It has also been shown to cause cataracts in adults and to inhibit the proper development of the eyes of young children.
Propylene Glycol
Used to moisturize the skin, but it is also a carrier for other chemicals, bringing them into the skin and can affect the entire body. Propylene Glycol is known to be used as antifreeze. Not only is it an antifreeze, but it is used at airports to de-icing airplanes.
Methylisothiazolinone
A synthetic preservative used in skin care products that is absorbed through the skin. It is known to be a neurotoxin and several serious allergic reactions have been reported.
BHT
(Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is used as a preservative. May cause allergic reactions and skin problems. May also trigger the growth of cancerous tumors.
