4 Common Myths About Skincare
July 28, 2015 – Marina Engervik

Skincare is a big topic and there are many myths that need to be debunked. Here are some of the myths and what the real truth is.
1.
Myth: It's good when a product gives a tingling sensation to the skin.
Fact: This feeling tells you that your skin is irritated and that's not good.
The tingling sensation is actually your skin reacting to irritation, which often results in inflammation. Products that cause that sensation can harm the skin's healing process, make scarring worse, cause natural collagen and elastin to break down, and increase the growth of acne-causing bacteria.
Irritation or inflammation, regardless of what causes it, impairs the skin's immune response and healing.
2.
Myth: Your skin adapts to the products you use and eventually the products will stop working. Therefore, you should replace the products you use regularly.
Fact: Your skin can't adapt to skin care products any more than your body adapts to a healthy diet.
That is, if, for example, spinach is healthy for you today, spinach is always healthy, and spinach continues to be healthy, even if you eat it every day. The same applies to your skin, as long as you use what is healthy and good for your skin, your skin will remain healthy. There is no point in switching from something that works and is healthy for your skin.
3.
Myth: Skin should feel tight after washing, meaning it has been thoroughly cleansed.
Fact: Tight skin is dry skin and that's not good.
If your skin doesn't feel fresh, soft, and supple after washing, you've probably been washing your face with a cleanser that's too harsh for your skin. A cleanser that's too harsh can increase the appearance of fine lines because it strips away your skin's natural oils. This can in turn trigger breakouts because oil production is in overdrive and trying its best to compensate for the lack of moisture. Instead, use a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling fresh, soft, and supple after washing.

4.
Myth: If a product doesn't work quickly, move on to another product.
Fact: It often takes 8-10 weeks before you can see real results from the product you use.
It's important to stick with a skincare routine and product long enough to see what works for your skin and what doesn't. It's a good idea to wait 8 to 10 weeks before thinking about switching to a different product, then you'll see if the product really works on your skin. That way, you'll get to know your own skin and can find the perfect product for you.
