What are Essential Oils?

August 1, 2014 – Marina Engervik

There are a lot of different essential oils (also called essential oils), but do you really know what an essential oil is and why it can be so good for you? We love these oils because they are effective, healthful, and smell great!

Essential oils are usually extracted by distillation, often using steam. The oils are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and beverages, and to scent incense and cleaning products.

essential oils and essential oils

Essential oils come from the plant kingdom. Essential oils are natural oils found in the seeds, bark, roots, leaves, flowers and other plant parts of a flower/plant. An essential oil is the very essence of the plant from which it is extracted. An oil is therefore essential in the sense that it contains the characteristic scent and properties of the plant from which it is taken.

If you crush a rose petal between your fingers you will immediately feel the scent of the rose's essential oil, or if you cut up fresh mint you will immediately feel the fresh smell of mint.

An essential oil is not just the scent of a plant, but also the nutrients of the plant. Some essential oils have been used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. They can have a healing effect on wounds, act as a cleanser, relax and anti-inflammatory. These oils can be very powerful and some essential oils can cause allergic reactions and therefore essential oils must be used very carefully and in small quantities.

Essential oils are very exciting! Think about how many plants there are, all of which have their own essential oil, with their own scent, properties and nutrients. We have become familiar with many different essential oils and handpicked the oils we found to be most effective in our skin care, and which were also fragrant.

In our products you will find essential oils from lavender, tea tree, frankincense, grapefruit, rosemary, mandarin and several others. You can read about these oils in our list of ingredients here.
